IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO READ BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR GROUP LESSONS!

Spring Session for 2009-2010 School Year

Mondays April 5th to May 24th (No classes April 19th)
Browncroft Community Church at 2530 Browncroft Blvd.

NOTE THESE CHANGES FOR SPRING LESSONS:
1)All payments must be accompanied by the new PAYMENT form.
2)Families at BCC will use the LOUNGE and the YOUTH ROOM.  They will be QUIET rooms for quiet conversations and doing school work.
3)There is an EARLIER SET UP time for BCC.

RULES FOR GROUP CLASSES

1.  ALL students (even teenagers) must be with an adult or in class AT ALL TIMES.

2.  Parents must REMAIN on the premises.  You cannot drop off your child and leave.

3.  Do not use ANY items belonging to the host church (including pianos, chalkboards, & Sunday School property) with the exception of toys in the nurseries.

4. Parents & children who are not in classes may QUIETLY wait in the following areas:

    BCC - Lounge & Youth Room (Quiet Rooms), Nursery (B28) (ages 5 & under)
        The playground is NOT available during the 3rd period.
   
DO NOT USE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ROOMS:
    BCC - church offices, the library, the sanctuary, the kitchen, the chapel or the fellowship hall.
   
5. Be QUIET and do not RUN when inside the buildings.

6. If you have any problems or need help, please find the following people:

    BCC - Sheri Hanley, Ellen Gerwitz, Leanne Lynch, or Michele Boyer.
   
7.  Each family must take a turn to either clean up or set up in the building one time during the nine weeks.  Please choose either a SET-UP or a CLEAN-UP time slot. 
(BCC = SET UP 12:20 to 12:40 / CLEAN UP 4:15 to 4:30  NOTE EARLIER SET UP TIME)
SET-UP for BCC: moving tables/chairs & carrying items to prepare the rooms for classes. 
CLEAN-UP for BCC: closing windows, straightening tables & chairs, turning off lights, and flushing toilets.
PLEASE NOTE: There are limited SET-UP slots available.

Information about choosing classes:
- Classes vary in content, structure, requirements, fees, etc.
- It is the parents' responsibility to select classes which would be most appropriate for their children.
- PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTIONS, SO YOU WILL KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SIGNING UP FOR & SO YOU WILL KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING FOR EACH CLASS.
- Grade levels are suggested, but usually are slightly variable by one or two years. 
- Parents may visit classes at any time, but please do not bring younger children to class.
- Sign up is on a first come, first served basis.
- If a class is full, you may put your name on a waiting list OR choose another class, not both.
- If you want to make a change,  please do so before the sign up deadline! 
- If you cancel after the deadline, there will be a $15 cancellation fee!

II. MAIL Payment form, payments & expense fees by March 29th to:

    Ellen Gerwitz at 58 Banker Place, Rochester, NY 14616.  

III.  March 30th to April 3rd - Any payment received between these dates is subject to a $5.00 late fee.

IV.   April 3rd  - If payment is not received by this date, your family's classes will be canceled.

Please be responsible in submitting your payments on time! (If you have a family emergency, such as a death in the family, please contact Ellen Gerwitz for an exemption from the above late fees.)  Irresponsibility is not an emergency!

INFORMATION ON THE SCHEDULES

There is a small break of five minutes between the classes to allow students to change rooms. Each block represents one class. Each block contains the following information: name of the class, age or grade level of students, name of the teacher, & total cost of the class per student for all weeks.

Descriptions of the classes are located on the pages following the schedules in alphabetical order for each location.  Each listing contains the name of the class, the name of the teacher, the age or grade level & the cost of the class. If you have any questions regarding the content of a class, please call the teacher or Ellen Gerwitz.

CLASSES AT BCC Eastside

Advanced Sign Language (ASL) (Grades 5 - Adult) ($15)(7weeks) Jeff Boyer 
Expand your general knowledge of the use of Sign to increase your communications skills with Deaf individuals. Review basics,and then learning to join signs together to make sentences . By the end of classes students should be able to have conversations with each other in sign and understand each other.

Alphabet, Bounce, and Craft (Ages 4 - 6) ($30) (7weeks) Valerie Burrows
If your child took the last ABC class then this is a continuation of that class. We will be starting with J and having lots of fun, singing/musical chairs (which all the kids last time loved and asked to do every class), and craft that deals with the letter. This class is very interactive, they will be doing some lapbooking and various other crafts. NOTE: Parent need to know that the children will probably get messy and should not wear their best clothing.

American Girl Samantha (Grades 1- 6) ($ 18) (7 weeks) Allison Gerwitz
Learn about the Victorian era by doing crafts, playing games, and eating food found in the American Girl Samantha books.  Hands-on fun while learning about history at the same time!


Archery (Ages 8 & up) ($20) (7 weeks) Jeff Boyer 
Correct usage of equipment and safety stressed. Bringing your own bows, arrows are optional. During bad weather we will hold class inside (wewill play Darts). We will also discuss tracking and wilderness survival as well. Otherwise we will meet outside. Dress for the weather.

Art: High School (Grades 7 - 12)  ($54.60) (7 weeks) Sue Jenkins (begins at 12:40 & goes to 1:35)
Student requested curriculum for this course focuses on adding realism to drawing through the exploration of multiple mediums including: Pencil drawing : Exploring Portraiture. Proper facial feature pencil drawing instruction plus facial proportion will be explored including shading, adding value, and detail through pencil drawing. Pen and Ink observational object drawing. Students will be inspired by the detail pen and ink drawings of Leonardo da Vinci. Pen and ink drawing techniques including pointillism, hatching, cross hatching, contour enhancement will be instructed and explored. The final product will be a detailed pen and ink composition. Modern day Pastel still- life inspired by Cezanne and Janet Fish. Students will work together to build a still life arrangement of their own after being inspired by  the work of Cezanne and Fish. We will then learn soft pastel techniques and create a drawing based on our still life arrangement. Digital photography will also be incorporated.

Art: Lower Elementary (Grades K- 3) ($54.60) (7 weeks) Sue Jenkins (begins at 1:40 & goes to 2:35)
1. 3-Dimensional Masks. Students will be introduced to the art of decorative masks created by many cultures. We will learn to create a decorative mask design of our own using patterns, varying line styles, color enhancement and collage. A unique 3-dimensional design will be the result. 2. Multi–media composition: Watercolor, charcoal drawing and collage. Students will be introduced to  multi-layered and multi-media compositions which incorporate foreground, middle ground and background. We will learn about and create a watercolor landscape background painting. In addition, we will learn to work with charcoal to create detailed middle and foreground detail enhancements. Introduction to collage will help us complete our composition. 3. Working with clay- pinch and coil pots. Students will be introduced to clay hand building techniques and will learn to work with clay to create a pinch or coil pot. Pots will be finished and decorated with paint.

Art: Upper Elementary (Grades 4 - 6)  ($54.60)(7 weeks) Sue Jenkins (begins at 2:40 & goes to 3:35)
1. Sunglass Portraiture inspired by MC Escher and Magritte. Students will be instructed in techniques to create realistic portraits in pencil with color enhancements for unique sunglass reflection. 2. A room with a view: Trompe l’Oeil – (“fool the eye”). Students will be introduced to multi layered composition (foreground, middle ground and back ground) and will create a design which incorporates these elements in a colorful, composition which indicates the students’ view of their world. 3. Illuminated Manuscripts.  Students will be introduced to the artwork of the Middle Ages, specifically decorative, illuminated manuscript designs. We will create a personal illuminated letter design which is inspired by the manuscript art work of the Middle Ages. Drawing, pen and ink, composition development and colored pencil will be explored.

Note for all ART classes: All MATERIALS INCLUDED IN PRICE. As with all artistic instruction, each student works at his/ her own pace. Therefore, more / less time may be necessary for each individual project than planned. Accordingly, all projects may not be explored, however an additional project may be introduced if time allows.

Ballet Basics (Grades K-5) ($12) (7 weeks) Michele Boyer
I have studied ballet, tap, Jazz, and pointe for 10 years at a competition level. Also taught classes before I was married and the last few years. All levels of children are welcome to join in to practice the study of ballet. We will be studying and reviewing the different positions, movements, arm positions, and much more. We will also be putting movements together to music to make a small routine. On the last day we will invite all of the parents to come and watch all that the children have learned and progressed. Children need to wear comfortable clothing and either socks or ballet slippers.

Basic Sign Language (Grades 1-4) ($15) (7 weeks) Michele Boyer 
Children will have fun learning basic sign language such as alphabet, numbers, food, emotions, animals, etc. We will be using games to learn new words and handouts to practice at home.



Basic Tumbling/Balance Beam (Grades K-4) (7 weeks) ($9) Alyssa Kober 
In this class your child will learn the basic skills in tumbling & on the Balance beam. They will begin each class with warm-up & stretching, & then they will practice how to do forward rolls, handstands, bridges, & more. On the balance beam they will begin with basic walking (forwards, backwards, on tiptoe, etc.) & advance to leaps, knee scales, & V-sits. For students that have mastered these skills, we will work on more advanced moves according to their capabilities. If you have any questions feel free to email me- aaleap92@juno.com. Student Requirement: Please have shoulder length hair pulled up and shirts tucked in.

Chinese Language Basics & Practical Conversation (4th grade & up) (5 weeks) ($15) Xiaoxue Cheng
This class will give an introduction of Chinese language basics as well as teach some practical basic Chinese conversations. It would be best if two family members (e.g. a parent & a child, or two siblings) can take the class together, so that they can practice the conversations after each class. Homework will be assigned and checked each time the class meets. I'll prepare some handouts, so no textbook is required to buy. The class will meet from 4/12 to 5/10 for 5 sessions only. NOTE: Xiaoxue's English name is Susan Cheng.  She is a member of our group.

Country Dancing  (Ages 10 & up) ($7) (7 weeks) Allison Gerwitz
Country dancing is upbeat and lively. It includes English Country dancing, Contra dance, square dances, and circle dances.  Until about 10 years ago, it could only be learned at historical museums such as Williamsburg and Genesee Country Museum. Now, it's popular all over the United States. It's a great way to meet new people and socialize with friends.  Courtesy and gallantry are reinforced through the dances which encourage proper interaction between opposite genders. In addition, you can also experience history with it being dull, dry, or dusty.  Above all, the most important thing is to have fun and laugh. NOTE: You do not need to sign up with a partner in order to participate. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Creative Writing 1.0 (10 years old & up) (7 weeks) ($15) Michael Scott   
This class is designed to introduce a student to the essential elements of creative expression through the written word. Lessons will cover everything from where to find ideas about what to write, differences in genre (poetry, non-fiction, fiction, etc.), how to create believable characters, evocative settings, compelling dialogue, and gripping action, and what you should know to publish. Interested students should have a basic grounding in grammar and a love of words. Note: I’ll make exceptions for gifted eight or nine year olds! Bring: A notebook with detachable pages and a working pen or pencil. About Me: Michael Scott has been writing fiction since age 10. He has two completed novels and is currently working on a third, fourth, and fifth.

Creative Writing 2.0 (11 years old & up) (7 weeks) ($15) Michael Scott
This is a writing workshop for those students who are actively writing stories. Students will share their material, receive and offer peer critiques under the guidance of the instructor, and learn to develop their writing skills through this interactive process.  Bring: A notebook with detachable pages and a working pen or pencil. About Me: Michael Scott has been writing fiction since age 10. He has two completed novels and is currently working on a third, fourth, and fifth.

English Country Dancing (Ages 6 to 9) (7 weeks) ($7) Ellen Gerwitz
As homeschoolers, we all get that question - "What about socialization?", right?  This class is the perfect answer to that question.  English Country Dancing improves socialization skills as well as helps people to become more comfortable with proper dancing techniques. Students will be taught how to introduce themselves, how to ask each other to dance, how to politely accept and refuse a dance, and how to work together to accomplish a goal. This class resurrects the lost art of chivalry that is so lacking in our modern society.  They will be taught all the steps involved in a typical English dance most of which simply require the ability to walk forwards or backwards. Students must be able to follow basic instructions and should know their right from their left.  Parents are encouraged to take the class with their child.

File Folder Games - Language and Math (Ages 4 - 8) (7 weeks) ($12) Kim Scott
Class utilizes Carson-Dellosa's wonderful colorful file folder games which practice basic skills for Language Arts and Math. Everything from shapes, counting, letter sounds and blends, coins, adding, subtracting to homonyms and synonyms, abc order, adjectives, fractions, money, multiplication and division, and much more. Lots of variety to play 3 or 4 different games each week for the whole session. Most games are for individuals to play alone. A few are for partners to play together.

Flag Football (Ages 8 - 13) (7 weeks) ($5/ $5) Jeff Cole and Louis Williams
We will be playing flag football and working on skills like catching, throwing, and evading tackles. This class will meet on the soccer field and use the assigned room only in the event of rain.  Student requirements: wear sneakers and clothes that can get dirty, possible grass stains. Note: please write a check for $5 to Jeff & $5 to Louis.

Floor Hockey I (Grades 1 - 4) (7 weeks) ($10) Jen McMullen (Asst. by Karrie Schmidt)
Please join us for 35 minutes of fast-paced fun playing floor hockey! We will begin each class with a review of the rules. Next we will learn and practice basic skills. Lastly, the bulk of the class will be spent playing a game. Each player is required to bring and wear their own helmet and sneakers, and to bring their own stick. We look forward to seeing you this Spring!

Floor Hockey II (Grades 5 & up) ($10) (7weeks) Jeff Boyer
This class will involve advanced rules of hockey(ie. Icing, off sides, different penalties, etc.). We will have drills and games to enhance your child’s hockey skills and knowledge of the game. Players must bring their own stick and helmet (bike helmets are fine).

Fun with Crafts (Grades 1-4) ($16) (7 weeks) Michele Boyer
Come and let your creativity juices flow with various craft projects that includes sand art, ceramics, sun catchers, fabric canvas, and more. We will even be doing a special Mother’s day project. All materials will be provided by the teacher.

Geography Folder Activities (Grades 3 - 4) (7 weeks) ($12) Kim Scott
Students will learn basic skills about maps and global geography using Evan-Moor Geography Centers. Students will independently use two colorful and self-explanatory file folder activity sets each week to practice the various lessons. Topics include: globes & grids, compass rose & directions, keys & symbols, land & water forms, US states & regions, countries & continents, etc. I will circle the room helping with directions and answering questions.  A list of topics your child covered will be sent home on the last day for your records.

How to Draw Disney Characters (ages 6 & up) ($12) (7weeks) Jeff Boyer
The children will be learning how to draw Disney created Characters. Something for both boys and girls!  Students should bring drawing paper, pencil, and eraser. Watch your child progress in their drawing skills.

LEGO Builders (Ages 7-12) ($9) (7 weeks) Darrien Boyer
During this class you will learn to build a variety of Lego creations by taking part in fun challenges and competitions leading up to a bigger challenges that will test your Lego building skills. Children will need to provide their own Legos for the class. Children will be working on projects in class and at home. They will be encouraged to work on the weekly projects at home and may have an adult's help. 

Open Tap Class (Grades K-6) ($14) (7 weeks) Michele Boyer
This tap dance class will focus on learning single steps, then incorporating the steps into series of combinations. A few of the basic tap steps include the brush, flap, shuffle, and ball change. We will be working to strive to produce clean tap sounds with each step. We will start each class by stretching and warming up our muscles to get them ready. Tap dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats so this class will not only be physical for gym credit, but also can be used as music too. All levels of practice are welcome to participate. We will invite the parents to view all they have learned on the last week. Children are required to wear tap shoes for this class and comfortable clothing.

Preschool Fun (Ages 3 - 5) (7 weeks) ($18) Jillian Hall
Snacks, play doh, coloring, playing, sharing, signing, dancing. just LOADS of fun!!!

Spanish Flamenco (Ages 11 & up) ($9) (7 weeks) Allison Gerwitz
Flamenco is an ethnic dance from Spain which involves those beautiful, long, ruffled skirts and those “clicking things” (castanets) and foot-stomping (heel work).  Flamenco is different from ballet in two key ways:  (1) bodies can be any shape and size, (2) the dancing and the music has more rhythm. Flamenco encourages having your own style and expressing emotions through dancing. We will cover body movements, heel work, and hand and arm movements while learning specific dances. Please have students wear comfortable clothing which allows for freedom of movement and socks (no shoes). Allison is finishing her fourth year of instruction at Hochstein under Lisa Piccione, who has performed and taught Flamenco worldwide.  NOTE: Returning students from the older level class are welcome because there is always something new to learn.

Theatre Skills (Grades 5-12) ($16) (7 weeks) Michele Boyer
I was a musical theatre major in school and participated in many plays throughout the years. In this class, children will have fun while learning Improvisation and acting skills. We will be doing commercials, small plays, skits, role playing, etc. The children will learn to work with others in groups and by themselves while expressing themselves. Learning memorization and writing their own scripts at times. Children will be putting on a performance during the last class.

Wild World of Sports  (ages 8-up) ($10) (7 weeks) Jeff Boyer 
Boys and girls will have fun playing a variety of sports. Some include basketball, volleyball, soccer, kickball and more. We will do a different activity each week. Comfortable clothing and sneakers needed. Some classes held outside, weather permitting.

Wilton 1: Discover Cake Decorating (Ages 10 - Adult) (7 weeks) ($35/$15) Sarah Kenney 
*$35 including all supplies or $15 if you have ALL supplies
Course 1 Covers the basics including guidelines for baking cakes and demonstration of how to level, torte, fill and frost a cake. Students get to practice with their own home made icing each week and decorate their own home made cakes with techniques learned. Supplies needed: Course 1 lesson plan, and Course 1 kit includes tips(3,12,16,21,104,2D,67 or 352) 9" icing spatula, 2 reusable decorating bags, 2 reusable couplers, flower nail, practice board and stand, decorator’s brush and tip cleaning brush.  *** Students will also need supplies to make icing and cakes including a tub of Wilton Piping gel and a can of meringue powder (available in 4, 8 or 16 oz) and SOME type of disposable decorating bags: plastic or parchment available.

Wilton 2: Flowers and Borders (Ages 10 - Adult) (7 weeks) ($35/$15) Sarah Kenney
*$35 including all supplies or $15 if you have ALL supplies
Course 2 Builds on previously learned skills:(must have taken Course 1 or have previous knowledge/ experience) students learn 2 additional types of icing: Royal and Colorflow; and 9 icing flowers; with the final cake decorated with basketweave. Supplies needed: Course 2 lesson plan, and Course 2 kit including tips (1, 2, 5, 14, 47, 59, 81, 97, 101, 103, 104) set of 9 flowers formers, color flow packet and two 7 1/4" oval pans, as well as additional tips from Course 1 kit. *** Students will also need supplies to make icing and cakes including  a can of meringue powder (available in 4, 8 or 16 oz) and SOME type of disposable decorating bags: plastic or parchment available.
